I read about Operation Baking GALS (Give A Little Support) on Tracey in WA's blog, and I instantly thought of this story.
When Uncle Bruce was in Vietnam, Auntie Anne baked a sheet cake-sized cookie and sent it off to him. She thought that one enormous cookie, rather than many little cookies, would have the better chance of reaching Bruce intact. But when Bruce got the package, it was filled with crumbs...homemade with love, but crumbs nonetheless.
Operation Baking GALS organizes bakers and food bloggers into groups of volunteers who send soldiers in Iraq cookie-stuffed care packages every month.
I signed up earlier this week and am waiting for my baking orders. I missed Round #1, but Round #2 starts soon. If you've got the time and feel like doing something nice for someone you don't know, you should sign up too!

What a wonderful thing to do. Not only do you bake great cookies, but you clearly have a good heart as well!!

This is such a worth while mission! My hubby has been in the Navy for 27 years. He was in the Gulf War and Dessert Storm, he said that cookie crumbs are better then the food over there any day! Make sure and put a little note in the box to let them know how proud we are of them :) You ROCK Fred! :)

Boy, hearing that story makes me really feel stupid! What can I say, I was young and in love! ... Tracy was right, Bruce also thought that the crumbs of that LARGE cookie were the best food he had while over in Viet Nam. Guess even cookie crumbs are better than nothing!
Gee, do you think you got the “cookie gene” from me???? LOL
Love ya, Auntie Anne

When my dad was in Vietnam I sent him cookies every week. I never thought to ask if they arrived in good condition. I have signed up with Baking Gals and I'm so thrilled to be able to do this.
