Looking for something to do on a rainy Friday in September in New York? Go eat something! We stuck pretty close to home this time, but it was nice to get out--even in the rain.
First stop: A Salt & Battery for some deep-fried Mars bars. Candy bars dipped in batter and tossed in hot oil. Now if that's not a heart attack on a grease-stained paper basket, I don't know what is. These were super sweet but tasty. This is definitely a once-in-a-while kind of snack.
Next stop: Birdbath Neighborhood Green Bakery, a creation of City Bakery. This place opened a while ago, but this was the first time we stopped in. (They use "green," low-wattage bulbs, so you can never tell if it's open.) I had high expectations for these cookies because City Bakery is supposed to have the best cookies in town. (And you know what I thought of the raved-about cookies from Levain Bakery.) The oatmeal raisin was pretty good. I liked the texture, but I think it could have done with a smidgen of cinnamon. The chocolate chip was pretty good as well, but I found that the chocolate was too bitter and the cookie itself wasn't sweet enough. But these are among the best we've tasted so far.
