Last week, Sheryle, a reader and real-life cookie taster, mentioned an old recipe she had for a spice cake studded with...wait for it...chopped gummie orange slices.
I've considered making gummie bear and jelly bean cookies before--perhaps for an oatmeal version of a stained glass window cookie--but I've always been concerned that the soft candy would melt out of the dough or crystalize and get tooth-cracking hard while baking. Sheryle said neither of these problems popped up with her gummie cakes and that I should give a cookie version a go.
Fall is already in the air around here, and it'll soon be prime spiced-cookie season. I'd better to get to work on this one!
I make orange slice cookies...they are my great-grandmother's recipe. If I had the recipe on hand right now, I'd send it to you! (Moving...blargh!) They are an oatmeal-y cookie with lovely chunks of orange candy in them...they don't melt at all!
